‘The Defenders’ Showrunners On The Decision To Bring Elektra Back

Before the events of The Defenders, Elektra was killed in combat alongside Daredevil. Despite dying in combat, her body is taken into The Hand’s custody as it is put inside an ancient tomb at the end of Daredevil season 2, implying that she would be returning at some point.

Many fans believed that Elektra would return for Daredevil season 3, but when it was revealed that she would be returning for the first season of The Defenders, fans got pretty excited. Elodie Yung was perfectly cast in the role and is one of the standout characters in Marvel’s Netflix series.

Recently, showrunner Marco Ramirez discussed the decision to bring Elektra’s resurrection into the events of The Defenders:

“I definitely think Jeph Loeb really wanted the idea of an Elektra resurrection storyline to be a part of her story. And I think that once we got to where we got organically by the end of season 2 of Daredevil, the idea was pretty clear that she’s coming back. When Jeph and I made the phone call to Elodie before the [script for the season 2 finale] came to her because she was getting killed, she was made aware [that Elektra would die in the finale]. We were like, ‘Hey, we’re really sorry you get killed. Also, though, you come back from the dead.’ She was kind of like, ‘So why are we having this phone call?’ Which was funny. But I would say half of [why we made her so important] was because it felt like that’s the story to tell. And she’s a major figure in the comics, she’s really beloved by the audience, and her resurrection storyline is very iconic.”

Ramirez, Loeb and the team behind The Defenders made the right call in bringing Elektra back into the fold for this show rather than wait for Daredevil season 3. Adding Elektra into the story adds certain personal stakes for Matt to confront and also gives her an opportunity to shine in the action scenes that involves the other three Defenders.

What do you guys think of Ramirez’s comments? Do you agree that by adding her into The Defenders was the right way to honor Elektra and her resurrection storyline in the comics?
