Dune director Denis Villeneuve addressed old rumors that he was up for The Batman after Ben Affleck exited the film.

When Ben Affleck stepped down from directing duties on The Batman, there were several intriguing names that were thrown out there as potential replacements before Matt Reeves got the job. Warner Bros. reportedly considered directors like Ridley Scott, Gavin O’Connor, George Miller, and Denis Villeneuve.

Denis Villeneuve is currently in the midst of launching his own potential franchise with Dune and the director tells Josh Horrowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast that he doesn’t remember being courted for The Batman. Villeneuve recently criticized MCU films, but shared that he would still be interested in directing a Batman film:

“Batman would be probably the only character that I could relate to. From what I read, like ‘Arkham Asylum,’ a book like that, I got in contact with when I was an adult. It’s for me, the character that I could connect to.”

Here is the synopsis for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune:

Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.

Dune arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
