Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton has nothing but positive things to say about Eternals director Chloe Zhao.

Destin Daniel Cretton and Chloe Zhao are the first two directors of Asian descent to tackle films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals respectively. Destin Daniel Cretton was given the opportunity to bring the MCU’s first-ever Asian lead superhero to life, through which he showcased his unique sensibilities in crafting intimate character dynamics as exhibited in films such as Short Term 12 and Just Mercy to the larger-than-life scope of the world’s biggest franchise.

Following the release of Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi, Marvel’s next film will be Eternals. Chloe Zhao, who won the Academy Award for Best Director for Nomadland earlier this year, was at the helm of the film, which boasts one of the MCU’s most impressive ensembles for a non-Avengers project to date, as well as one of the most visually striking entries thus far based on the trailers alone.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Destin Daniel Cretton, and while he hasn’t had a chance to see much from Eternals yet, besides what has already been released to the public, he was pleased to sing the praises of Chloe Zhao’s films and how they have resonated with him:

“I mean yeah, who doesn’t admire Chloe Zhao? Her movies struck a chord in me that I didn’t even know existed. There’s something about her films that just work their way into your bones and sit with you for weeks after watching them, and she does it so quietly and seemingly effortlessly. I actually was just hanging out with her on the red carpet, she came to our premiere, and she just had such a gentle spirit about her, she’s just a wonderful presence to be around.”
