Director Destin Daniel Cretton explained why he chose to helm Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings.

Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 plans include its first feature film with an Asian lead superhero titled Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings. The highly-anticipated film will be helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose most recent film, Just Mercy, is scheduled to receive a wide release later this month.

Like many filmmakers who have tackled Marvel Studios’ projects, Destin Daniel Cretton is best known for smaller films such as Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Destin Daniel Cretton was asked why he opted to helm Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings considering it feels like a step in a different direction for him, prompting the filmmaker to explain that he would love to give his son an Asian superhero to look up to:

I grew up without a superhero to look up to. I gravitated to Spider-Man when I was a kid, primarily because he had a mask covering his face and I could imagine myself under that mask. I would love to give my son a superhero to look up to. I feel very privileged to be a part of telling that story.

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised in an isolated compound located in China and trained by his father Fu Manchu, a Chinese crimelord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down Fu Manchu’s criminal empire.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released in theaters on February 12, 2021.
