Destin Daniel Cretton gives an update on the status of his sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

At least until Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings remains as the top-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film of 2021. Not only that, but the film is also the most-acclaimed of the franchise this year from critics and audiences alike. Destin Daniel Cretton, director and co-writer of the film is officially on board to helm a sequel as well as a mystery Disney Plus series.

A Shang-Chi sequel is no surprise given both the film’s success and the clear plans that Marvel Studios has for the character and the Ten Rings organization’s prominence in the MCU moving forward. Now that he’s back to return, Destin Daniel Cretton gave an update regarding where he’s currently at in the development process:

“I’ve done [zero]. It’s a fun place to be right now. Everything is a possibility. We’re just tossing very loose ideas around and we’ll start to hone in on something, hopefully. There are a lot of ideas that we had in the opener, and some of those ideas are planted as questions, by the end of our movie. There are things that we potentially want to explore in the future. Everything changes so much, so it’s hard to say how many of those ideas will actually make it to the finish line, but there are many of them there.

[Feige] and the team there definitely have a clear idea of where they’re taking the MCU, but they’re also open to pitches and things that we’re passionate about. One of the shows that we’re creating was initially an idea that I was bouncing around with our producer while we were shooting Shang-Chi and it just happened to fit in with the trajectory of where they’re going with the franchise. So, it’s a little back and forth.”

It sure sounds like Destin Daniel Cretton has a lot of ideas up his sleeve for the future of Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings. Given that a sequel is coming, one can only imagine what kind of threats the Master of Kung Fu will face. Also, with an original Disney Plus series also in the works, it will be interesting to see how it expands the lore on the small screen. Either way, Shang-Chi has one of the most exciting futures of any new Avenger.

Here is the synopsis for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley and Tony Leung.
