‘Detective Pikachu’ Could Lead To A Pokemon Cinematic Universe

During an on-set interview with IGN, Legendary Entertainment producer Ali Mendes discussed the possibility of seeing a Pokemon Cinematic Universe after Detective Pikachu.

The first live-action Pokemon film will center on the adventures of Pikachu and a young man named Tim as they attempt to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of the latter’s missing father. However, Legendary Entertainment producer Ali Mendes noted there are still a lot of opportunities to explore more of the Pokemon universe after Detective Pikachu hits theaters:

“[Pokemon is] such a rich universe. There are so many ways you can go inside of it. We’re trying to get the first movie right, and then once we’ve done that, we’ll see where we go from there, but absolutely. There are a lot of opportunities.”

In fact, Mended explained that while Detective Pikachu features many of the 800+ Pokemon that currently exists, they want to use all of them in the future:

“Even the Pokemon themselves, there are eight hundred of them. We’re going to have a lot of them in [Pokemon: Detective Pikachu], but we want to play with all of them at some point.”

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Directed by Rob Letterman from a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
