Director Gareth Evans has revealed what kind of movie he pitched to Warner Bros for the unmade Joe Manganiello Deathstroke film.
2017’s Justice League was a film that underwhelmed both audiences and critics. The film currently only holds a 40% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only earned a little over $650M on what was reported to be a $300M budget, which caused Warner Bros to rethink their plans for the DC Extended Universe. Unfortunately, one of the planned projects that were apparently scrapped was Joe Manganiello’s planned Deathstroke film.
Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke only had one brief appearance during an after-credits scene in Justice Leauge. In it, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor was attempting to recruit him into a league that could potentially stand up to the Justice Leauge, possibly for a sequel that never materialized. In addition, a solo Deathstroke film was planned with The Raid director Gareth Evans attached to direct.
While speaking to Yahoo, director Gareth Evans revealed that the movie itself would have less than two hours long and something of an origin story for the character:
“The plan was, I wanted to tell something that would be a lean story, that would be kind of an origin of that character. Something that felt like it could be 100 minutes or 110 minutes long, max – not to go over the two hour period with it.”
In addition, he revealed that the style and tone of the Deathstroke film would be akin to South Korean noir films:
“Back then, I was massively influenced by the noir films coming out of South Korea, so that was my pitch. I was like, these films are amazing: the texture, and the tones of colours, the grit and the aggression of them is super interesting to use to tell Deathstroke’s story.”

Joe Manganiello last appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Here is a plot synopsis for the film:
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
Justice League is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
