The X-Men are returning to animation.

X-Men Marvel Disney Plus

Disney Plus has ordered an animated X-Men television series that will pick up right where the original left off.

The ’90s were a boon for animated superhero series with shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Spider-Man: The Animated Series and X-Men. Now, TheWrap reports that the popular X-Men series from the now-defunct Fox Kids network is returning, with Beau DeMayo serving as head writer and exectuive producer. Details on the animated series revival are currently minimal, though it is certain that the project is set in the same timeline as the original one. The series is titled X-MEN ’97.

X-Men: The Animated Series writers Eric and Julia Lewald are consulting on X-MEN ’97 alongside director Larry Houston. The series is set to feature the return of X-Men voice actors Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith and Alyson Court. The project also features the voice talents of Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett and AJ LoCascio.

Disney Plus is clearly making good use of Disney owning all the Marvel Fox properties. The animated X-Men series was added to Disney Plus in 2019, where it was revisited by thousands of new and old fans. With the animated series more popular than ever and nostalgia being one of the most powerful currencies in the world, it makes sense that the folks at Disney want to bring it back to life.

The X-Men animated series premiered in 1992 and became an overnight success for Fox Kids. The series was praised for its mature storylines, intense action sequences and adherence to the source material. The Fox Kids show lasted for five seasons, producing over 75 episodes. The series served as the perfect entry point for young fans to dive right into the Marvel mythology and universe.

The final episode of the series saw the X-Men standing outside the X-Mansion as they said goodbye to Charles Xavier, who left with Lilandra to visit the Shi’Ar homeworld. The ending was an emotionally fitting end, so it will be interesting to see how the new creators move the story forward. Hopefully we’ll get to see Professor X’s adventures in space alongside the mutants on Earth saving the planet without their leader’s guidance.
