Disney may not be done with Naomi Scott’s live-action version of Aladdin as the company is reportedly talking about putting a sequel into the works.
During a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Aladdin producer Dan Lin talked about the possibility of a sequel to the Disney film. He mentions the positive reception that Aladdin had with fans and how they weren’t trying to do a shot for shot remake of the original film. But apparently, he and the other people behind the live-action adaptation feel that there is more story to tell.
Lin wouldn’t give away anything but he stated that they were looking at what had been done in the past with Disney’s home video sequels and that they were exploring where to go with the franchise:
“We have now. We certainly when we first made the movie wanted to just make the best movie we could and let audiences tell us if they wanted to see more. And I would say resoundingly audiences want to see more. They’ve watched this movie multiple times. We have lots of fan letters about people who really go back and they bring their friends and bring their family. And so we feel like there’s more story to tell. We are going to treat it the same way we treat the original Aladdin movie and not going to do a shot by shot remake of anything that’s been done before. We’re really looking at what’s been done before in the past and the home video, and there’s just more story to tell with the underlying materials. So without giving away too much, we are certainly exploring where we can go with this franchise.”
The live-action Disney film was, of course, a big hit with audiences, earning over a $1 billion at the worldwide box office. While critics were divided on the film, a common praise was Naomi Scott’s performance as Jasmine. So perhaps Disney doesn’t want to let a potential franchise and a new star, like Naomi Scott, go to waste!
