Scott Derrickson, director of the smash hit Doctor Strange, recently took to Twitter to express his gratitude for the fans that showed up in droves to support the Marvel standalone.
Marvel films have dominated the box office since Iron Man was released in 2008, with the culmination of the first phase of the franchise, The Avengers, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing film ever. (It was higher, but then Star Wars mania happened.) The origin films of the Avengers and their assorted allies have enjoyed consistently explosive success through the years, with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor having the most opportunity to reel in audiences with their respective trilogies. The latest additions to the gang, Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, have enjoyed similar turnouts, while the Guardians of the Galaxy are in a league of their own – until they hook up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War, of course, which may destroy box office records altogether.
Doctor Strange was a more mystic endeavour than its Marvel-related predecessors, which have relied on technobabble and science-fiction for the most part. The Thor films were the one exception to this trend, with its population of gods and monsters, and after Doctor Strange, the next turn Marvel audiences will take into the occult will be in Netflix’s Iron Fist. Magic is becoming a well-used commodity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it will be interesting to see how it melds with the scientifically-minded among the Avengers.
The unorthodox film has been widely loved by fans since it was released last November, premiering almost a month earlier in China. It has been running theatrically worldwide since then, and is now available for digital download. Next week it will be released on DVD and Blu-ray, and fans can add it to their Marvel collection. Derrickson was clearly aware of how much he owes to his cast, crew and the ravenous fans, and made his thanks known on social media yesterday, along with his film’s excellent Rotten Tomatoes score:
A week before the Blu-ray release, Doctor Strange has finished its theatrical run. My heartfelt thanks to all who helped mAke it a success. pic.twitter.com/PQYrCO4IzX
