Concept art for Doctor Strange shows off an alternate spooky look for Dormammu’s zealots.
Doctor Strange was one of the wildest films the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever produced thanks to its star-studded cast and insane psychedelic visuals. With director Scott Derrickson at the helm, Doctor Strange even managed to ignite a couple of scares throughout its runtime. The film boasted a compelling narrative that saw Kaecilius and his zealots breaking away from the Ancient One to serve the ghoulish, celestial Dormammu. Many of the zealots got their comeuppance and this concept art from Jerad S. Marantz imagines them in a more horrifying state than the film could produce.
Taking to Instagram, Marantz shared a spooky look at a zealot of Dormammu’s who has perished. Barely looking like humans, the zealots’ bodies seem to have eroded and have now become this terrifying metal-looking thing.

Here’s a really fun destroyed zealot concept for #drstrange I did a while back at #Marvel visual development. I was experimenting with the opacity option in keyshot I think all of the cut out areas was actually made up of text spherically applied to the model. I may have done a little compositing in Photoshop to design the solid areas. Really fun process. #conceptart #creaturedesign #mcu #zbrush #keyshot
It’s understandable why this concept art of Dormammu’s zealots didn’t make it into the final film considering how scary this would have looked on the big screen. The silver design choice is quite inspired and actually resembles the Doctor Doom from 2015’s Fantastic Four, albeit without the sporadic green lights that were embedded on the villain’s skull. Seeing this take on the zealots would have been cool but it definitely would’ve turned people off from Doctor Strange. Hopefully, visuals like this will appear in the upcoming sequel that’s set to be directed by horror icon Sam Raimi.
