‘Doctor Strange’ Opens In Japan & Debuts At No. 1

It’s been a few months since Doctor Strange opened in the United States and it’s already made millions of dollars domestically and worldwide. One final market that was left for the film was Japan, where it finally opened this past weekend and it took the number spot, grossing $4.5 million.

Doctor Strange has made an estimated domestic total of $231.6 million and $433 million overseas, bringing its total gross to over $664 million globally.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the title character, will next be appearing in Thor: Ragnarok, followed by a role in the much-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War.

The film, directed by Scott Derrickson, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, B.D. Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Tilda Swinton. It will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, February 28.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
