Dwayne Johnson revealed Black Adam will be released in December 2021, and unveiled the first look at himself as the DC anti-hero.
Fans have known that Dwayne Johnson would be playing Black Adam for several years now, but the DC anti-hero’s standalone has taken some time getting off the ground since the actor’s casting was first revealed. However, production on Black Adam is finally scheduled to begin in summer 2020 and now Dwayne Johnson has taken to his official Instagram account to announce the film will be released in theaters on December 22, 2021.
Included in the post was official concept art depicting Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam that was created by digital artists BossLogic and DC Comics artist Jim Lee. In his caption, Dwayne Johnson expressed his excitement over finally being able to fulfill a childhood dream of playing a comic book character suited to his rebellious nature and offered fans a hint at what to expect from his Black Adam:
“I’m honored to join the iconic #DCUniverse and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM.
BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line.
He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people – but he does it his way.
Truth and justice – the BLACK ADAM way.
This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together.”

Warner Bros. and DC’s Shazam! was originally going to feature Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam before the decision was made to give the character his own standalone film.
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
