Dwayne Johnson has an idea for a sequel to his Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw.
One of the most exciting performances Dwayne Johnson has given in his career is that of Hobbs from the Fast and Furious films. Originally starting off as an antagonist brought in to take down Dominic Torreto’s team, Johnson’s Hobbs evolved into a core member of the team. After appearing in 4 core Fast and Furious films, Johnson’s Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Shaw received their own spin-off that saw the unlikely duo uniting to fight a common enemy.
While there are more Fast and Furious films in the pipeline, a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw doesn’t feel like it’s in active development. That doesn’t mean that Dwayne Johnson doesn’t have any ideas, however. While appearing on The Jesse Caggle Show, Johnson was asked what’s next for the future of the Hobbs & Shaw franchise.
“So when it comes to Hobbs and Shaw, which we loved and loved making that movie, there’s an idea that I had that I called Donna Langley, called our writer Chris Morgan, our producer Hiram Garcia. And I said, ‘I have this idea and this direction for Hobbs.’ And I pitched it and it would be without giving it away, they all loved it. And, but it would be the, it would be that, it would be the antithesis of what Fast and Furious movies generally are in that they continue to go on and go on and go on in this case I wanted to, and I still want to do the quintessential Hobbes movie. That again, without giving it away that you watch a man walk off into the sunset.”
It appears that Dwayne Johnson is interested in creating a meaningful send-off to the character of Hobbs. Johnson and his Fast and Furious co-star Vin Diesel had a notably lengthy feud which led to Johnson not appearing in the ninth entry in the franchise, which debuted earlier this year. Johnson has since confirmed that he won’t be returning for the upcoming 10th and 11th entries in the franchise, though that could always change.
Here is the official synopsis for Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs and Shaw:
Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves. Hobbs & Shaw blasts open a new door in the Fast universe as it hurtles action across the globe, from Los Angeles to London and from the toxic wasteland of Chernobyl to the lush beauty of Samoa.
