Marvel Studios’ Eternals opened to a $71 million domestic debut at the box office.
As expected with the most popular film franchise in the world, Marvel Studios’ newest film Eternals opened to #1 at the U.S. domestic box office. According to THR, Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao’s unique superhero film featuring an all-star cast that includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie among many others opened to $71 million in its first three days.
Eternals’ solid box office performance shouldn’t be too surprising given Marvel Studios’ track record. In comparison, Black Widow opened to roughly $80 million and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opened to $75.5 million in its first three days. However, the film’s mixed reception with critics led to some analysts predicting the film would potentially open below $70 million.
The continuing box office performance of Eternals following its opening weekend will be watched with a close eye by analysts over the next few weeks. Upcoming films such as Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife among others serve as competition, but Marvel Studios’ new film will be the subject of much scrutiny from box office and industry analysts given the film being the franchise’s first to be rated “Rotten” on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes as well as the “B” CinemaScore, also a franchise low.
Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
