Ewan McGregor recently revealed that the Disney Plus Obi-Wan Kenobi series originally focused on Luke Skywalker instead of Princess Leia.
Earlier this year, Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered on Disney Plus after the show was delayed several times. The primary source of the delays was said to be scripting issues and several changes had to be made. Specifically, the writing was said to be too dark for what Lucasfilm wanted and was rumored to have Darth Maul as the primary antagonist.
One of the more surprising aspects of Obi-Wan Kenobi was its primary story. As it turned it, the character went on a mission to rescue Princess Leia from the Inquisitors. Her twin brother, Luke, ended up having a very minor role in the series, appearing in the first episode before having a more substantive role in the season finale. As it turns out, however, their roles were originally supposed to be reversed.
A Moment Of Genius
While speaking at FAN EXPO, star Ewan McGregor revealed that the show was originally going to be about Luke and Kenobi. Then, in a moment McGregor described as a moment of genius, everyone thought better of it:
“It was going to be a story about me and Luke. It was always going to be that, and that was one of the genius moments where everyone went, ‘Wait a minute,’ and then it changed.”
Here is the synopsis for Obi-Wan Kenobi:
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.
Directed by Deborah Chow from Joby Harold’s scripts, the series stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.
