Disney has officially announced Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Star Wars series centered on the Jedi Master.
During the Disney+ Showcase at Disney’s D23 biennial expo today, Lucasfilm officially confirmed the rumor that Ewan McGregor would finally be returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Reports emerged earlier this month that Lucasfilm had signed Ewan McGregor on for his very own Star Wars series on Disney+.
A standalone film featuring the fan-favorite Jedi Master was previously reported to be in development in the summer of 2017, with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) attached to the project. However, spin-offs beyond Solo: A Star Wars Story were put on hold last June after the second standalone Star Wars film underperformed at the box office. Rumors of a limited Obi-Wan Kenobi series were first reported in February.
Ewan McGregor will now return to the role after 14 years having last appeared in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the final installment of the franchise’s prequel trilogy. Details remain under wraps, however, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor is expected to take place in between Episode III and the original Star Wars film. Production on the series will take place next year.
Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series featuring Ewan McGregor will be the mouse house’s third live-action Star Wars series for Disney+. First up is The Mandalorian which will feature Pedro Pascal as a lone gunslinger after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The series which hails from Jon Favreau also stars Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte. The Mandalorian premieres November 12 on Disney+.
Following The Mandalorian, Diego Luna will reprise his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story role as Cassian Andor in a prequel series which will follow the Rebel spy working as an intelligence operative during the formative years of the Rebel Alliance. Stephen Schiff (The Americans) is serving as showrunner. Production on the project is set to begin next year after the actor completes his work on the second season of Narcos: Mexico.
