‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Eyeing Lowest Box Office Opening For ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise

A reset for the Harry Potter franchise might be on the horizon...

Warner Bros Grindelwald Fantastic Beasts The Secrets of Dumbledore

The opening weekend box office numbers for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore are expected to be the lowest in the Harry Potter franchise.

When Warner Bros. launched the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2016, it was hoped to relaunch the Harry Potter franchise, similar to what we’ve seen with Star Wars. However, controversies have plagued the Fantastic Beasts series, with the studio now waiting to see how the latest installment performs before greenlighting another sequel.

Early opening weekend numbers for The Secrets of Dumbledore are starting to come in, and per Variety, the sequel is conjuring up a total of around $40 million after earning $20.1 million on Thursday and Friday. It’s worth noting that Harry Potter films have traditionally done very well overseas.

This opening weekend figure would be the lowest for the Harry Potter franchise to date, with the first Fantastic Beasts film earning $74 million and the second falling to $62 million. The budget for Secrets of Dumbledore was also reportedly around $200 million.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

Directed by David Yates from a screenplay written by J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves, the film stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner, Jessica Williams, Katherine Waterston, and Mads Mikkelsen.
