Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has finally arrived in theaters and we now know that there’s much more to the story than just Newt’s escaped magical beasts. The film not only introduces a whole new side of J. K. Rowling’s ever-growing wizarding world, but also a brand new concept called an Obscurus, which is basically an immense destructive force that’s created after young witches or wizards below the age of ten are forced to suppress their magic due to traumatic events during their childhood.

The movie features quite a lot of plot twists, but the biggest one comes towards the end when it’s revealed that Credence Barebone (played by Ezra Miller) is an Obscurus. The reveal comes after Percival Graves — who is actually Gellert Grindelwald in disguise — reveals his true intentions towards Credence, who then transforms into the dark force and wreaks havoc on New York City until he’s killed by a team of Aurors.

That said, eagle-eyed viewers noticed a small piece of the dark force floating away, which has led many to believe that Credence actually survived. Producer David Heyman confirmed this theory in a recent interview with CinemaBlend and revealed that a scene that never made it into the final cut of the movie showed Credence alive and well:

“We actually had a scene, which we cut, which was Credence going to a boat, to get on a boat somewhere else. But we cut that, because we didn’t want to have it be such an, ‘Ahhh, here we go.”

The producer also offered a description of the deleted scene.

“Him getting on a boat, maybe a boat with Newt, maybe not, and heading off out of New York.”

Heyman then went on to confirm that the core group of Newt, Jacob, Tina and Queenie will be back in the sequel along with Grindelwald and Credence.

“I don’t think [Newt will be at] the heart of all of them. I think he’ll be part — so will Tina, Queenie and Jacob — will be part of the next one. And I’ve heard that Dumbledore has been confirmed, too. And Credence and Grindelwald. I think they will be the main players.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is now playing in theaters.
