We’ve known for a while now that Gellert Grindelwald will show up in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but director David Yates has now confirmed that another significant Harry Potter character will appear in the series.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Yates revealed that Albus Dumbledore will indeed be in Fantastic Beasts 2, which is slated for a November 2018 release. In fact, casting for the role is already underway, meaning that we should expect to hear some casting news within the next few months.
Details about the sequel are scarce at the moment, but it’s believed that Johnny Depp — who will make a cameo in the first installment — is playing Grindelwald, a dark wizard who has ties with Dumbledore. Gellert and Albus were close friends until they were involved in a three-way duel with Aberforth Dumbledore, which resulted in the death of Dumbledore’s young sister, Ariana. Grindelwald then went on to terrorize Europe in the early twentieth century until he was defeated by Albus in a legendary duel.
During the Fantastic Beasts global fan event last month, J.K. Rowling announced that there will be a total of five movies in the prequel series. The author wrote the script of the first two movies and has already plotted out the entire franchise, which takes place decades before the events of the Harry Potter films. As previously reported, David Yates will return to direct the sequel, which will feature several returning cast members along with Depp and Zoe Kravitz.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on November 18th.
