The ninth entry in the Fast & Furious franchise tentatively titled, Fast & Furious 9 will hit theaters sometime after the upcoming spinoff film Hobbs & Shaw in 2020. Filming on Fast & Furious 9 will reportedly start in April 2019 and it looks like two veterans of the franchise in Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson have signed on to return.
Rodriguez has been a staple of the franchise since her first appearance as Letty Ortiz, the wife of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) in The Fast and the Furious. She has then appeared in Fast & Furious, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious.
Gibson has also been a significant member of the beloved Furious Family as Roman Pearce. He made his debut in the franchise in 2 Fast 2 Furious co-starring with the late Paul Walker, where he portrayed a longtime friend. He returned to the franchise in Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious.
Interestingly enough, both Rodriguez and Gibson have expressed frustration with the franchise and even threatened to leave for different reasons. In Rodriguez’s case, she threatened to leave due to how The Fate of the Furious treated the female characters compared to their male counterparts. As for Gibson, he had a public feud with Dwayne Johnson over the fact that Johnson opted to take a role in the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff before a proper Fast & Furious 9 was to be made. The nature of Gibson and Johnson’s feud has seemingly cooled down since then.
Either way, expect to see Letty and Roman reunite for another adventure behind the wheel. Hopefully, Dom’s team head to space in Fast & Furious 9.

Meanwhile, we will be returning to the franchise with the upcoming spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw. Plot details remain under wraps but the spin-off will feature an unlikely team-up between Johnson’s Hobbs and Statham’s Shaw after the franchise breakouts discovered an undeniable chemistry in the eighth film of the main series, The Fate of the Furious.
Hobbs & Shaw is being directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2) from a script written by franchise veteran Chris Morgan. Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Seven Bucks Productions’ Hiram Garcia are producing the film.
“A spinoff of The Fate of the Furious, focusing on Johnson’s US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs forming an unlikely alliance with Statham’s Deckard Shaw.”
The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Vanessa Kirby, Eddie Marsan, Eiza Gonzalez and Idris Elba.
Hobbs & Shaw will hit theaters August 2, 2019.
