‘Fast & Furious’: Helen Mirren & Michelle Rodriguez Talk Returning

Michelle Rodriguez Fast and Furious Dungeons and Dragons

Fate of the Furious introduced Helen Mirren to the ongoing saga, as well as featured the return of franchise stalwart Michelle Rodriguez. Now the two female stars of the Fast and Furious film series talk returning to the “family” for the next installment.

Helen Mirren sat down with EW and discussed how much she loves the series and wanted to be in the most recent Fast and Furious film, in which she played the Shaw family matriarch. She said:

“They very kindly wrote me in and that was really sweet of them and I love those guys, they’re fantastic.”

“I think that’s one of the reasons they’re popular films, because that is the one element that everybody all over the world can identify with simply, easily, and directly, so it’s great to see this other level being brought in with the different generations of the family, the fact that family actually goes on through many generations over long periods of time,” she said. “I thought that that was a nice thing to introduce into the storyline.”

Mirren isn’t the only member of the family who has such high regard for the Fast and Furious series. Longtime star Michelle Rodriguez, who earlier this year made headlines when she insinuated she might not return to the saga, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how she wants the series to explore the female characters more and not just have them be accessories to the male characters. She explained:

“We always see the guys talking, we know what they’re thinking and we know their relationships, but I can count with one hand in eight movies how many times the women talk to each other. So it’s, ‘Who are they, what are they about, and do you care?’ I just brought up a question and if that doesn’t get answered and as I start on this path [of more dramatic roles] I just wonder if our paths meet at all.”

Rodriguez also noted that friend and co-star Vin Diesel would find a way to make sure she gets brought back for the next Fast and Furious film:

“I’m sure he’ll convince me. Yes, you’re there to entertain people, but when you’re on that scale you also have a responsibility. I won’t accept anything else, and Vin won’t accept anything else. He knows, he gets it.”
