The Fate of the Furious was the first film in the franchise that did not feature Paul Walker’s Brian since the actor’s tragic death. While the previous film retired the character in what many fans considered to be a fitting farewell, it appears there was a point in the eighth film’s development where they considered bringing Brian back. In an interview with Screen Rant, director F. Gary Gary revealed how the creative team behind the film considered using CGI to have Brian return in the The Fate of the Furious.
Gray discussed how the creative team behind the film considered many options to address the character’s absence:
“We had hundred of conversations about the best way, the classiest way to handle and address Paul’s legacy in this franchise. You know, there’s multiple ways you can go. You could create a digital Paul and make him more of a character. You could leave him out and pretend that he’s in this world anymore. These are all conversations we had and we felt like the choice we made respected his legacy the best. And my understanding is that his family was really happy with how we treated him.”
Personally, Furious 7 found a respectful way to retire Paul Walker’s character and bringing the character back using CGI would have undermined that fitting conclusion to Brian’s story. What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
