Kevin Feige Talks Introducing The Skrulls, The ’90s In ‘Captain Marvel’

LegacyWhile the Marvel Studios panel at Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday had fans in a frenzy with footage from Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and more, it may have been equally as exciting for the man responsible for it all — Kevin Feige. Among the aforementioned films, Captain Marvel concept art was shown and it featured a certain species never before seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“This might be the one room in the world where I can say this word and they might go crazy and they did,” Feige said during an interview with IGN.

The magic word was “Skrulls” and Feige was certainly on point with his estimation of the fan reaction. During the panel, art of Brie Larson as the titular hero was shown, also causing a buzz. Perhaps the most interesting Captain Marvel news was the early ’90s  setting that would pair Larson with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury — with both of his eyes.

Why the ’90s? Other than it being ‘fun’ for the studios, Feige never showed his hand as to why Marvel is choosing to turn back the clock. It certainly isn’t making the Marvel Studios president feel any younger.

“The answer to that is even more spoilers, but the easy answer is we thought it would be a fun time period to make a film in,” Feige said. “I graduated high school in 1991 and I’m now about to make a period piece set in that era — it makes me feel very old.”

Why Nick Fury? Again, no one is going to catch Feige slipping any spoilers.

“There are very particular answers to that question, but again the easy answer is we thought it’d be fun,” Feige said. “We love Sam, we love that character. It would be fun to see what he was like in his earlier days.”

Just the fact that Fury was aware of Captain Marvel when assembling the Avengers could add a whole new layer to those actions. It’ll be interesting to see how they play off Larson’s absence in films that take place well after her standalone movie. Despite it being a period piece for the MCU though, the franchise of films are finally of age with Captain Marvel set to be the 21st installment. Now the MCU can legally get a taste of whatever was in Thor’s flask in Avengers: Age of Ultron that was aged for a thousand years.

Overall, trusting such a new franchise to introduce the Skrulls into the MCU says quite a bit. The Kree-Skrull War was a famous story arc in the comics and one that fans have been waiting to see on screen for a while. That’s not something lost on super-fan Feige.

“There’s and entire section of the comics that deals with the Kree-Skrull war and we haven’t tapped into that at all,” Feige. “We thought that be an amazing, huge portion of mythology to belong to Captain Marvel”

Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to helm the project which will begin filming in February of 2018. The script has been written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Oscar nominee Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

Captain Marvel is slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

It wasn’t a trailer per se — more so just a compilation of random moments designed to excite the audience. This is a smart move. Having the Skrulls appear chronologically prior to the start of the modern era MCU allows them the flexibility to transition actors in or out of the franchise in preparation for their next phase.
