Things are starting to get exciting for us Star Trek fans. We have a new movie on the way this summer (one that is mercifully free from the clutches of writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman), there’s a big fan event in L.A. this weekend*, and coming up next year we have a brand new Star Trek TV series headed up by Bryan Fuller and set during the best era of Trek. Today, that new series got its first teaser trailer. Let’s take a look!
Okay, so, there’s not really much to it, but since the series doesn’t actually start shooting until this fall, this is about as good as we’re going to get for a while. Still, it’s a new Star Trek show, set just after the Original Series timeline, so I can’t complain!
It’s worth noting that the tag line at the end (“New Crews. New Villains. New Heroes. New Worlds.”) could be read as a soft confirmation of the rumor that this new show will be presented in an anthology format with each new season focussing on a different crew.
Also worth noting, over at Birth.Movies.Death., Devin Faraci (who broke the aforementioned anthology scoop) is hearing that this new Star Trek might feature a return to the Mirror Universe. The Mirror Universe is one of those ubiquitous pop culture terms that you’re probably familiar with even if you’ve never watched Star Trek, but it’s essentially a parallel universe where all the major facets of the Trek universe are present, but flipped around the wrong way. In the Mirror Universe the United Federation of Planets is replaced by the violent, totalitarian Terran Empire, Kirk achieved his status as captain by murdering his predecessor and torturing any who might seek to supplant him, and Spock has a goatee. It’s great, and the last time we saw the mirror universe was more than a decade ago in Star Trek: Enterprise. It’ll be fun to revisit it, especially during this particular time period.
The new Star Trek series is set to premier on CBS at some point in 2017, after which new episodes will debut weekly on the CBS All Access streaming service. I’m looking forward to it! Meanwhile, Mirror Universe David wants to give me a wedgie.
*By the way, I’ll be in attendance at the fan event this Friday. I’ll have an extensive write-up posted sometime this weekend, but if you want to get live updates, follow me on Twitter @DavidMDaut.
