Barry Allen has lost a lot of the people he loves on The CW‘s The Flash: his mother, his father, his friends. Now, Barry is yet again facing another loss. With Iris’ life on the line thanks to a glimpse of the future in which Savitar kills her right before Barry’s eyes, Barry and company have been doing everything they can to change the future and save Iris. Speaking with TV Insider, the woman who brings Iris to life, Candice Patton, had some things to say about Iris’ future (or lack thereof).
Perhaps a bit of a shocker, Patton revealed that the showrunners haven’t even told her what’s going to happen with Iris.
“No, they didn’t tell me. I have no idea and it’s a little alarming. I think I know, but you never really know. I am just in the dark as the audience so it will be really interesting to see if Team Flash can pull it off. I’m hoping they can, because I need a job.”
With Patton also in the dark about what’s going to happen to her character, she only has each episode and the show’s newfound focus on Iris to look forward to.
“They did a really great job this year of giving Iris so many levels, she’s genuinely in fear for her life…and we’ve also seen her being kind of reckless about her future knowing that, if she’s not going to die until May, she can’t die today.”
Despite Iris’ newfound recklessness, Patton ultimately hopes that Iris will play a role in deciding her own fate; she doesn’t just want to leave it to Barry and Wally to save her.
“Hopefully, we’ll see a version of Iris who gets the strength to be part of saving her own life, to be a part of the narrative that ensures her safety. How cool would that be? She is a very capable woman, so how great would it be for a character like Iris, who has no superpowers, to be part of her own destiny?”
As May draws closer and closer, Iris’ fate continues to hang in the balance as Team Flash’s attempts at changing the future have failed thus far. With time running out, the question as to whether Iris West will really die this season looms ever larger.
