TV Line has confirmed that Jesse L. Martin will be taking a medical leave of absence from The Flash.

According to the outlet, Jesse L. Martin suffered a back injury during the hiatus, which explains why his character, Joe West, has been seated or kneeling against something in nearly all of his scenes for the fifth season of The Flash thus far. Now, a studio representative has confirmed that Jesse L. Martin will be taking a break from the series with the following statement:

“Jesse Martin is taking a medical leave of absence from The Flash. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West.”

It currently unknown when Jesse L. Martin’s temporary departure will be seen on screen or for how long, though the outlet’s sources stated that Joe West’s absence will be explained on the series.
