Kong: Skull Island has taken the number one spot ahead of Logan at the Friday box office, grossing an estimated $20.2 million. The second of Warner Bros.’s MonsterVerse films, the film is now expected to make betwen $52 and $54 million over the weekend. It cost the studio $185 million to make and will probably make up for that cost both at the domestic and international box office.
Even though Kong: Skull Island bested Logan at Friday’s box office, the James Mangold-directed film managed to make an additional $10.5 million on Friday in its second weekend, but will still probably drop to second place by Sunday, with an expected gross of $37 million. Last week, Logan made a tremendous $88.4 million its opening day at the box office.
Kong: Skull Island follows a group of explorers and soldiers who arrive at Skull Island to get a layout of the mysterious topography of the island. What they find when they get there is more than they bargained for when they come across Kong and the Skull Crawlers. The film stars John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John C. Reilly.
Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Kong: Skull Island is now playing in theaters. You can check Heroic Hollywood’s review of the film here.
