Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss has revealed that he has no interest in returning to the franchise for the spinoffs.
Game of Thrones ended on something of a bitter note. The last season of the franchise was not particularly well received by fans despite several Emmy wins. Before the dust even settled on the original series, however, HBO put a number of spinoffs into development.
The first of these Game of Thrones spinoffs will be the prequel series, House of the Dragon starring Matt Smith. The second series will be based on the Tales Of Dunk And Egg stories which also take place many years before the events of the main series. However, original co-creator D.B. Weiss has no interest in joining any of these series.
While speaking to Variety, D.B. Weiss opened up about the possibility of returning to the franchise where he confirmed that he was done with it after spending 11 years in the world of Game of Thrones:
“All in, we were 11 years, probably, doing that show. When I say 11 years, it was full on, all in, all day, every day for 11 years. It was the best decade of our lives. It still kind of feels a bit like a dream, but we got to a place where it was pretty clear to us that we had reached the end of what made sense for us to be involved with in that world that we lived. It just felt like, for us, it was time to move on and get excited and terrified about building something else — building lots of something elses.
We never saw more ‘Game of Thrones’ shows [as] something that made sense for us to be involved with, given where we were just as people at the time we were done with the original.
Here is the synopsis for the upcoming prequel series:
Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Miguel Sapochnik will serve as the showrunner with Martin and Ryan Condal. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno.
House Of The Dragon is set to premiere in 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming spinoffs and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
