Warner Bros. Discovery is moving forward with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, a new series that will serve as a prequel to the hit HBO drama Game of Thrones. The announcement was made during the Max streaming service presentation on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which has received a straight-to-series order, will be written and executive produced by George R.R. Martin, the author of the Song of Ice and Fire book series that inspired Game of Thrones. Martin will be joined by Ira Parker, who will also serve as an executive producer on the show. In addition, Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will also be executive producers for the series.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is based on Martin’s novella of the same name, which is set in the same world as Game of Thrones. The story follows a young hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall, who becomes embroiled in the politics of the Seven Kingdoms after he is appointed as the squire of Prince Aegon Targaryen, who is known as “Egg” due to his bald head. The novella was originally published in 1998 as part of the Legends anthology, which featured stories by a number of popular fantasy authors.
Given the popularity of Game of Thrones, it’s no surprise that HBO is looking to capitalize on its success with a prequel series. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is just one of several prequels that have been in development at HBO over the past few years. Another prequel, “House of the Dragon,” made its debut this past Summer, breaking streaming records for Warner Bros. Discovery.

A second season of House of the Dragon is currently in development at HBO. The second season begins filming later this year and won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest, according to recent comments from Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max.
