“The Long Night is coming . . . and the dead come with it.”
Jon Snow might be referring to the terrifying White Walkers and their zombie army but for Game of Thrones fans, his quote from last week’s trailer portends the return of their favorite faces, albeit lying in state. Continuing its Hall of Faces-themed tease for the next season, today HBO released posters with defining quotes from characters both alive and dead in the show’s fantasy world of Westeros and Essos.
This would have the most meaning for Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, famously left for dead in a pool of his own blood after being betrayed by his Night’s Watch brothers. His fate is the driving question of the new season and its marketing campaign. But, like the teaser, Jon is hardly alone as he is joined by the faces of Daario Naharis, Melisandre, Oberyn Martell, Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime Lannister and Tormund Giantsbane.

16 character posters are being released in total, with specific ones being sent to outlets like Entertainment Weekly (where you can see Joffrey) and Variety (which has Sansa’s). There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to the release beyond popularity. (Pedro Pascal’s Oberyn is included despite having been killed in his first and only season).
The Hall of Faces is the headquarters of the Faceless Men, master assassins who collect the faces of the dead to use as magical disguises. Arya Stark stole one in the Season 5 finale to carry out her personal revenge and was punished for it by being blinded.
Game of Thrones‘ sixth season premieres Sunday, April 24 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
