Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones drew strong reactions from viewers over the showrunner’s decision to have Daenerys Targaryen and her forces destroy King’s Landing even after her enemies surrendered, with even those who felt the Mother of Dragons’ turn was foreshadowed seasons ago arguing her descent into madness was underdeveloped and unjustified. The controversy surrounding “The Bells” has resulted in the episode earning the worst Rotten Tomatoes score in the history of the series, based on 52 reviews with an average rating of 6/10. The critical consensus for the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones reads as follows:
“Death, destruction, and the deterioration of Daenerys’ sanity make “The Bells” an episode for the ages; but too much plot in too little time muddles the plot and may leave some viewers feeling its conclusions are a little unearned.”
