The Wrap reports F. Scott Frazier (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) is set to write Universal Pictures’ video game adaptation of Gears of War.
Dylan Clark (Planet of the Apes, Oblivion) is producing the project through his Dylan Clark Productions with Gears of War co-creator Rod Fergusson. Scott Stuber (Identity Thief) is serving as executive producer. Executive vice president of production Jon Mone and creative executive Mika Pryce are overseeing development for the studio with senior vice president of production Brian Williams overseeing for Dylan Clark Productions.
Microsoft acquired the Gears of War video game series back in 2014. Fergusson returned to lead Microsoft’s development studio The Coalition which is focused solely on the Gears of War franchise. Shane Salerno (Armageddon) was previously attached to write the film’s script. Plot details remain under wraps but the video game adaptation has been previously described as a new story within the Gears of War universe, rather than an adaptation of one of the games in the series.
Gears of War was launched by developer Epic Games in 2006 defined the first-generation of high-definition gaming. The iconic franchise went on to gross over $1 billion with over 45 million players across the globe. The latest installment of the game series, Gears of War 4 released in the fall of 2016. Microsoft debuted the announcement trailer for Gears of War 5 at E3 2018. The game is expected to release sometime in 2019.
