‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Sequel Release Date Revealed

The story will continue.

Ghostbusters Afterlife

The release date for Sony’s upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has been revealed.

Way back in 2019, Sony officially unveiled the title for the upcoming installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The film was put together following the controversial reception and box office underperformance of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. Unfortunately, the film was delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic before finally being released in November of 2021.

At the time of Ghostbusters: Afterlife‘s release, the reception to the film can aptly be described as fine. Fans seemed to love it while critics were mixed but mostly ended up on the positive side. It only ended up making $197M worldwide but on a $75M budget in the pandemic era, it was a solid enough hit. Earlier this year, Sony would confirm that a sequel to the film was in development. Now we finally know when that film will be released.

The Release Date Is Revealed

According to various sources including Variety, the upcoming film will be released on December 20th, 2023. While plot details for the upcoming film are currently unknown, it was confirmed earlier this year, via Ghostbusters‘ official Twitter account, that the movie would move the action back to New York City:

Here is the official synopsis for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife:

After being evicted from their home, a single mother and her two children are forced to move to a decayed farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma, left to them by the children’s late grandfather, where a series of unexplained earthquakes are occurring despite not being situated on any fault and strange things are happening in an old mine once belonged to the alleged occultist Ivo Shandor.

The children discover their grandfather’s history with the original Ghostbusters, who have since been largely forgotten by the world beyond their fan base.

When supernatural phenomena relating to New York City’s “Manhattan Crossrip of 1984” arises and threatens the town, the kids, along with their family and friends, must use the Ghostbusters’ equipment to save it.

Directed by Jason Reitman from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kena, Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bokeem Woodbine, Oliver Cooper, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is available on all home media formats. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming sequel and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
