God of War is officially coming to Amazon Prime Video.

A live-action adaptation of Santa Monica Studio’s God of War games is headed to Amazon Prime Video. The streaming giant has given a straight-to-series order to the project, with Rafe Judkins serving as its showrunner. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are writing and executive producing.

A joint venture between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions, God of War is set to premiere in more than 240 countries and territories across the globe. The announcement comes a few days after the release of Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarök, the fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history.

God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios. “We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of Warmythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash added: “God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way.”

Santa Monica Studio’s creative director Cory Barlog is executive producing Amazon’s God of War adaptation alongside Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Yang, and Roy Lee. Jeff Ketcham is on board as a co-executive producer.

The storyline of the God of War series

God Of War follows the story of Kratos, a spartan warrior who made a pact with Ares, the Greek god of war. Before being killed off by an enemy, Ares gave Kratos the power of the Blades of Chaos to vanquish almost anyone who stood in his way in the name of the gods. After finding out that Ares lied to him, leading him to kill his own wife and daughter, Kratos went on a rampage to enact revenge on all of Olympus.

After realizing that Zeus was his father and someone who wanted him dead, Kratos ended up butchering him and fleeing to the Nordic region. Santa Monica Studio’s God Of War games pit Kratos against Norse foes while he journeys to spread his late new wife’s ashes with his son, Atreus.
