We recently found out that Krampus writers Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields have been tapped to pen the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, but now Variety has revealed that Dougherty will also be directing the project.
At one point in time, Gareth Edwards — who directed the first movie — was on board to helm Godzilla 2, but he later departed the sequel so that he could pursue smaller projects after he would be done working on his Star Wars spin-off film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which recently crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
As previously reported, the project could also be the beginning of a new writers room for the shared Godzilla/King Kong movie universe. Legendary and Warner Bros. reportedly hired Dougherty and Shields as part of a team that will help them out with their plans to create a cinematic universe that will lead into a Godzilla vs. Kong movie.
Godzilla 2 will open in theaters on March 22, 2019. Meanwhile, Kong: Skull Island is currently set for release on March 10, 2017, with Godzilla vs. Kong on May 29, 2020.
