Is Goldar Rita Repulsa’s Zord In The ‘Power Rangers’ Reboot?

Repulsa
The feature film reboot of the Fox Kids series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is a major departure from the original series, featuring a much darker and more mature take on the Rangers opposed to the colorful and campy children’s series. Power Rangers features an overhaul of the visual aesthetics from the series including the suits worn by the Rangers as well as the alien invader hell bent on world domination, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). While the Dinozords themselves remain the same Dinozords from the series, they have also been given an updated alien-like look.

Rather than being revealed in the film’s official trailer, the reveals of the redesigned Zords, Megazord, as well as Goldar — the villainous minion of Rita Repulsa — have all come through the film’s toy line. Continuing this new tradition, a new image of the Goldar toy has surfaced that seems to reveal a new bit of information as it suggests the character of Goldar is actually a Zord himself, rather than just being a minion this time around.

As you can see below, the abdomen of the new toy flips open to reveal Repulsa inside, seemingly controlling him.

So what do you guys think? Would making Goldar a Zord himself be the right choice? Lionsgate is doing everything they can to distance themselves from the Fox Kids series. The original character of Goldar was a very campy character and wouldn’t exactly fit into this new take on the Rangers so it would make sense to fundamentally reimagine him. But is making him a Zord going to far? Sound off in the comments below.

The film also stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart (Pink Ranger), Becky G as Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Bill Hader as Alpha 5, and Bryan Cranston as Zordon. Here’s the official synopsis:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.

Kind of a bummer. Still excited but he’s a cool character.
