Sounds like a blast!

The Green Lantern is once again being retooled for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.

Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti is no longer involved with the live-action Green Lantern series as the project is being redeveloped following the recent DC Universe shakeup at Warner Bros. Discovery. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have revealed that the new version of the series is set to revolve around Hal Jordan and John Stewart, with the two comparing the series to the Emmy-winning HBO crime drama True Detective.

“Lanterns is a huge HBO-quality TV event,” the DC Studios heads said during the DC Universe presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. “It’s already in development. Our vision for this is very much in the vein of True Detective. It’s terrestrial based. It’s got two of our favorite Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, starring in a True Detective-type mystery and it plays a really big role leading into the main story that we’re telling across [the DC Universe]. This is a very important show for us.”

Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine were set to star in Greg Berlantin’s Green Lantern series, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing it for HBO Max. The producers behind the series then started from scratch to focus on John Stewart before it got overhauled for the third time for the DC Universe.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
