Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are set to write Margot Robbie’s Barbie film, with Gerwig being eyed to direct the project.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. and Mattel announced they have partnered to produce a Barbie film with Margot Robbie portraying the iconic lead character. Now, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have been tapped to pen the screenplay for Margot Robbie’s Barbie film. Furthermore, Greta Gerwig, who earned a Best Director Academy Award nomination for her work on Lady Bird, is also eyeing the Barbie film as a directing vehicle.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s previous writing collaborations include the films Mistress in America and Frances Ha. Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg also starred Greta Gerwig opposite Ben Stiller and Brie Larson. Greta Gerwig’s next project as director, a new feature film adaptation of Little Women, is currently in post-production.

The Barbie film marks the first announced deal to come from Mattel’s newly-established Mattel Films. Margot Robbie will also co-produce the project with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara under her LuckyChap Entertainment Banner. Margot Robbie is also set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan, McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
