Disney Imagineers Show Off ‘Real’ Groot From ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

The Imagineers have done it again!

Baby Groot Guardians of the Galaxy Disney Imagineers I Am Groot

Disney Imagineers have created a “real” Groot from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films for the parks.

Before Baby Yoda, there was Baby Groot, and it looks like he will be coming to life for the Disney Parks sometime in the future based on a recent innovation from the Imagineers. Animatronics are nothing new to Disney Parks, but it looks like the Imagineers took it to the next level with a robot Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Bringing the Guardians of the Galaxy character to life was made possible thanks to Project Kiwi. R&D Imagineer Principal and Project Lead Scott LaValley said the following about the “real” Groot:

“Project Kiwi started about three years ago to figure out how we can bring our smaller characters to life at their actual scale in authentic ways. It’s an exciting time for bipedal robotics and with an incredible team and our combination of technology, artistry and magic, we are bringing characters to life that could not have happened anywhere but Disney.”

It’s unclear when “real” Groot will arrive at the Disney Parks, but you can check out a video from TechCrunch that shows Groot in action below!

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC, which is now finished. Details on the third chapter of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame. Gunn is also working on a Holiday Special for Disney Plus, which will be filmed during the sequel’s production.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
