James Gunn Teases Key Role For Guardians In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Director James Gunn states that the Guardians of the Galaxy will have major roles to play in Marvel's upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War.

While promoting his office horror film The Belko Experiment, James Gunn mentioned that the Guardians of the Galaxy would play pivotal roles in Avengers: Infinity War. In addition, he confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would happen.

In an interview with Complex, Gunn said the following about how the Guardians would fit into the climactic battle that is Infinity War:

“I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”

Essentially, while the movie is a big event crossover featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the emphasis is on them, the Guardians still have a substantial role to play in that they’re tied to Thanos and the cosmic side of things. When asked about what will be next for these characters after the big crossover, Gunn added that another movie is indeed in development:

“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else?”

So from the sound of things, Gunn is still committed to working on more tentpole films, but they might not necessarily all be Marvel-related. Though that’s not necessarily going to rule Marvel out entirely – Gunn originally expressed a lot of interest in working on a Thunderbolts movie, something that seems like it could enter development at some point now that Suicide Squad proved that a supervillain-centric movie could be successful at the box office. If he does want a break from Marvel specifically, then perhaps DC could snag him for a future project if they play their cards right.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 2 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017. Avengers: Infinity War will be released on May 4, 2018, along with a sequel slated for a May 3, 2019 date. A third Guardians of the Galaxy film is being planned, though no creative team has been assigned to work on it as of yet.
