The cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has opened up on having to compete with the cuteness of Baby Groot in the upcoming sequel.
The CGI character nearly stole the show when he danced during the post-credits scene of the first film. Director James Gunn explained that “he does have that very strong, super cuteness, super baby feel. Only he kills people,” while speaking with Yahoo Movies at the film’s Los Angeles press day.
Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt said Baby Groot is “completely adorable, and really works,” before he went to explain how integral the character working was to the overall film:
“And that was important in the execution of this film, just as it was important for Rocket [Raccoon] to work in the first movie. Because you’re giving these emotional lines to an animated character, and it’s really difficult sometimes for an animated character to evoke any emotional response from an audience.”
Dave Bautista, who plays Drax Destroyer admitted that there is no competing with the adorable little tree:
“Whenever you have to compete with cute little Baby Groot — it’s like you’re pouring your heart out in a scene — and you know this little tree is going to steal the scene. It sucks, man… They’re not even paying attention [to you]. All they’re seeing is Groot’s big eyes and his innocent look, and they’re like, ‘Awww.’”
But there is one character who doesn’t buy into Baby Groot’s adorability factor. Karen Gillan, the actress who plays Thanos’ daughter Nebula revealed the Luphomoid assassin is not a fan of the baby tree:
“Nebula doesn’t really like Baby Groot and she doesn’t find it cute at all. So that was kind of fun to play with because she was sort of enjoying being mean [laughs].”
