‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’: James Gunn On Why Ego Revealed Truth About Star-Lord’s Mom

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Marvel

SPOILERS ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Don’t read ahead if you wish to remain unsullied.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been out for two weekends now, and since most people have seen it, director James Gunn feels comfortable discussing spoilers and some production stories. And since it’s Mother’s Day, what better way to celebrate it than to discuss the death of Peter Quill’s mother?

In the film, it was revealed Ego (Star-Lord/Peter Quill’s father) gave Quill’s mother the tumor that led to her death. Ego fell in love with Quill’s mother and to stop himself from succumbing to human emotions, he decided it would be best to kill her. Kind of a mean move.

During a Facebook Live Q and A, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn discussed the scene and what led to this moment.

“Ego is a very complicated character. I think that Ego, and really the whole movie, is about Ego. This is true. It is about Ego taking over… He told [Peter] because on some level he wants to have a connection with his son. And also, he thinks in that moment that Peter understands what it takes to be a conqueror. And in that moment, he shares; he is blind; he is not very good [with social interactions] He thinks he’s very good with social interactions.[Ego] wants to have some sort of connection with Peter. And when Peter betrays that and shoots him, he then says, ‘I’ll just use him like I’ve used so many others in my existence.’”

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Micheal Rooker, Kurt Russell, and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the Guardians of the Galaxy and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
