Opening to box office success and critical acclaim, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 reunited fans with their favorite team of unlikely heroes and introduced a new cast of characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee returned to make another cameo appearance, although this time his brief role revealed that the icon has been playing the same character across all of the MCU films. However, while Lee’s cameo may have been a nice nod to a popular fan theory, several noticed that an error was made when Lee made reference to his appearance in Captain America: Civil War. During a Facebook Q&A , director James Gunn discussed Stan Lee’s cameo and acknowledged the continuity error he made during the brief sequence.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 being set before Civil War, Gunn admitted that he made an error when referring to Lee’s cameo in the latest Captain America film, though he did offer a reasonable solution to resolve the issue.
“One thing I found very funny and interesting is the fact that people thought Stan Lee is a Watcher and that all of these cameos are part of him being a Watcher. So, Stan Lee as—probably—a guy who is working for the Watchers was something that I thought was fun for the MCU. And yes, I know I made a mistake. I’ll own up to my mistake because Guardians of the Galaxy 2 theoretically happens in 2014 which is before Infinity War. And Stan Lee in the movie says, ‘That time I was the Fed Ex guy,’ which is what he is in Civil War. I screwed up; I wasn’t thinking, But I’m going to say that probably Stan Lee used the guise of a Fed Ex guy more than one time.”
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
