Everybody knows about Mantis from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. And they know that Drax thinks she’s ugly. Well, perhaps Drax should have waited until he got a better look at Mantis. The real one.
Well, at the concept art, anyway. This weekend, Andy Park, a concept artist and director of visual development at Marvel Studios, revealed that he was asked to show one of his favorite unused pieces of concept art. He opted to select an image of Mantis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which, he revealed, was approved, but as is often the case in films, things change during the visual effects stage. Thus, that qualified it as “unused.”
Indeed, the look at Mantis in the concept art is much more insectoid and alien-like. Here, have a look at the unused Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 art of Mantis in the image below.
I got called out by @osiristheory to show one of my favorite UNUSED concept art pieces… hmm, tough one. This was actually the APPROVED design of Mantis for #GuardiansoftheGalaxy Vol.2 but as it happens sometimes it changed during the practical FX stage. So thus, UNUSED pic.twitter.com/2aHIPqKUol

Makes you wonder how Drax, as well as those whom interacted with Mantis in Avengers: Infinity War, might have reacted to Mantis were she to have this original design in the Marvel Studios films. What do you think of how Mantis looks in this original concept art? Let us know in the comments below.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available now on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
