Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will introduce several new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Star-Lord’s father, who will be played by Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, Bone Tomahawk). Back in July, we found out that Peter Quill’s father is none other than Ego the Living Planet, which was pretty surprising, to say the least. Peter has been searching for his father for quite some time now, but he’ll finally find him in the highly anticipated sequel. However, will he live up to his expectations?
Speaking with Collider at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, Russell talked about the story of the sequel and how it explores family issues such as the relationship between Peter and his long-lost father:
“I was impressed with the stuff that I saw at Comic-Con, but they didn’t show you everything [laughs]. It’s a very complex story, and they really get into it. This is going to be one of the more—probably for Marvel, it’s more connected to human issues, family issues, parental issues, and issues that sons and daughters have with their moms and dads and their family tree, where they come from. I just think it’s going to be an interesting— Peter’s character in this one, he’s got dilemmas and he’s got decisions to make that are not just about whether to save that thing or that person. This is about finding out who you are, where you come from, and where you’re going.”
The actor then shared his thoughts on the footage that was shown during the Marvel Studios Comic-Con panel, which has yet to be released online:
“I thought it looked great too. I was really impressed with it, really impressed with it. I mean, believe me, from knowing the script, to see that and what he did with that sequence, I’m excited to see the movie [laughs]. I think it’s going to be really good.”
Lastly, Russell praised Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn, who also wrote the script of the movie:
“He’s really smart, he’s really sharp. He knows what he’s doing. Plus, he’s a great guy, but yeah, when you come to making the movie, James is really on top of it.”
Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5th, 2017.
