Mild spoilers ahead for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Don’t read ahead if you wish to remain unsullied.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 featured a plethora of cameos, references, and Easter eggs that satisfied both fans and critics alike. However, one reference that didn’t make the cut was based on everyone’s favorite merc with a mouth: Deadpool.

During a Facebook Live Q and A , director James Gunn revealed the fact that he almost included a reference to Deadpool during Stan Lee’s cameo. In Lee’s cameo, it’s revealed that he has been playing one character the entire time, across all the MCU films. During the cameo, Lee was going to mention the time he was a DJ at a strip club like he was in Deadpool.

While it would’ve been fun for Lee and Marvel Studios to acknowledge Fox’s X-Men Universe, it’s understandable why it got cut, though he didn’t mention why the reference didn’t make the final cut. Alas, at least we’re aware that some talks went down.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
