Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will finally arrive in North Americans this week, reuniting fans with their favorite team of unlikely heroes and introducing a new cast of characters as well. Returning for the latest adventure is Yondu Udonta, played by Michael Rooker, whose backstory will be explored in the latest Marvel Studios film. In an interview with ScreenRant, Rooker talked about crafting Yondu’s backstory and his collaboration with director James Gunn.
Rooker credited writer and director James Gunn with creating the backstory for Yondu.
“It’s all James Gunn. He wrote the script. There’s not a lot of, you know, we talked a little bit about it and, you know, actors always come up with, uh, he gives us the lay of the land and we come up with the connective tissues a lot of times internally. And that’s what took place. If we’re off a little bit, he’ll adjust us and stuff like that. Very cool. Great director.”
When asked if he had any input on Yondu’s bakstory and his personality, Rooker explained that he would occasionally add his own take on the character without consulting Gunn.
“Yeah. I just do it. I found that – a note for any would-be actors out there and everywhere – I think sometimes it’s better if you don’t talk about it, guys. Stop talking about stuff. Just do it. Know what I’m saying?”
