‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: James Gunn Shuts Down Rocket & Groot Spin-Off Rumors

Groot Rocket Raccoon Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has shut down rumors that suggested a Groot and Rocket spin-off was ever in the works.

James Gunn’s colorful and hilarious Guardians of the Galaxy films introduced us to some of the most complex and out-there characters in the MCU, namely a talking Racoon and a daunting walking tree who can, at most, utter 3 syllables. Rocket and Groot became instantaneous hits for Marvel and have become beloved by both adults and children alike. It became a literal no brainer to imagine both of them leading their own spin-off movie that focused on that exploits across the galaxy. It turns out that those prospects of a spin-off (of there were many but none credible) were never happening.

During an Instagram Stories Q&A, James Gunn was asked if we’d ever see a rumored Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off focusing on Rocket and Groot. Though he did shut down the rumors, Gunn didn’t rule out something happening in the future.

“That was never something that was happening, but who knows what the future holds.”

That spin-off would be an absolute success at the box office and if it had even an ounce of James Gunn’s wit, it’d be a critical darling. However, it seems that it’s one of those projects that looks better on paper but wouldn’t translate well on screen. Rocket and Groot, as loveable as they are, need to rely on other characters to have their humor shine. Now, if they decided to get Chris Hemsworth’s Thor on board for this supposed spin-off, that’d be something worth mulling over. For now, if we want to get our Rocket and Groot fix, we’ll have to patiently wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!

While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. Now, Gunn will begin production on the third film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC, which he is currently editing from the safety from his home due to the ongoing crisis. Details on the third chapter of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Sean Gunn.
