‘Guardians Vol. 2’: One Mid-Credits Scene Was Almost Removed

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 James Gunn

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has a record five post-credits sequences. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been known for adding a special treat for audiences who remain in their seats in the theater throughout the entire credits, and thankfully director James Gunn gave fans some fun extras as well as some hints towards the broader realms of the cosmos of the MCU.

One of those post-credits sequences hint at one of the most well-known Guardians in the comics: Adam Warlock. We see Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) observing a certain cocoon that would be intended to defeat the Guardians in the near future.

Gunn spoke with CinemaBlend about that particular scene, and how it was almost removed from the film:

I had to fight for Adam in the post-credits sequence. Because I really thought that’s where that should go. And I thought one of the main reasons to have the Sovereign in the movie was to give audiences the hint that Adam Warlock is coming. That was one of the reasons for them to exist. And I wrote that post-credits sequence in the first draft of the script. And then there were a lot of questions about whether or not we should put that in there, because people were going to expect Adam Warlock in Infinity War. So one of the things I promised — which I do all of the time on Twitter — is letting everyone know that Adam Warlock is not going to be in Avengers 3 or Avengers 4. It’s just not going to happen. Because I didn’t want people to have false expectations of what they thought was going to happen with Adam.

Fans often assume that mid-credits scenes that tease the future of a franchise signify that those details will be part of the immediate next chapter. However, The Avengers teased Thanos (Josh Brolin) in the mid-credits and yet, it will be nearly six years by the time he takes center stage in Avengers: Infinity War.

Either way, it’s great that Gunn was able to have that Adam Warlock scene added in the mid-credits. For one, it gets fans excited for what’s to come and also hints at the future of the Guardians before Vol. 3 is in production.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available on Digital HD on August 8, 2017. It will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K on August 22.
